A classic longer route with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains. There are two big climbs on this otherwise a gently rolling tour of northwestern Augusta County.

Routedetails

This route starts out moderately with a short, gentle climb and then nearly 5 miles of slow descent to the @point[Middle River](d,10990.76).

It climbs steeply through the @point[Village of Springhill](d,28629.23); then rolls through miles of farmland with views of the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains, reaching its furthest point from Staunton just outside Mount Solon, Virginia.

After a 2.5-mile climb to a high point on Mt Solon Road (VA 687), the route follows the Middle River and passes by @point[circa 1745 Frank’s Mill](d,59204.83) before a 0.5-mile section of busy U.S. Highway 250.

The route returns to Staunton along slowly-climbing Frog Pond and Morris Mill Roads.

**PARKING:** Park in Gypsy Hill in the vicinity of the duck pond to begin the route on Springhill Road (VA 613). The route takes you onto Churchville Ave via the main entrance to the Park, but you can also just walk your bike across the street to the gas station and begin here.

**START:** Gypsy Hill Park, 600 Churchville Avenue, Staunton Virginia 24401

**DIRECTION:** The figure eight begins counter-clockwise heading north on Springhill Road. Note @poi[the POI where Springhill Road makes a sharp right](1949496)just north of Springhill Village.

**DIFFICULTY/CHALLENGES:** This is an intermediate/advanced ride due to its length and hill climbs. The route is entirely on paved roads, with one large intersection crossing: @point[VA 262/Woodrow Wilson Parkway and Springhill Road](d,3925.28), and @slice[the 0.5-mile section on U.S. 250](d,62152.24,62920.55). Cross VA 262 and ride U.S. 250 with caution. @poi[Note the POI where Springhill Road makes a sharp left to avoid a nasty, steep gravel road off to the right (Dudley Road). ](2006367)

**FACILITIES ON ROUTE:** The route starts in Staunton with ample opportunities for food and rest rooms. There are facilities across the street from the park at a @poi[gas station/convenience store](1923038), as well as at @poi[Queen City Brewing](1923039), just across Churchville Avenue on Springhill Road. Facilities are also available on U.S. 250 at @poi[Jake’s Convenience Store](1923046). 
If you are lucky enough to end your ride midday Tuesday-Friday, you can even have lunch at @poi[Mike Lund Food](1923045).
