There is no such thing as a bad bike ride. Any ride, regardless of weather that gets us outside on our bikes seeing the world around us without the limitation of looking though a motor vehicle's windows, able to smell the air, feel the sky, touch the ground and see the beauty of nature and what man creates is about as close as we modern people can ever get to what folks like John Muir, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark experienced on their journeys into the wilderness. So get out there, on a weekend morning, or whenever you have a few hours to get on your bike and just ride for the fun of it.

Routedetails

This is a fully paved rolling hill route on fairly low traffic country roads.  The short segment on US 151 from Pipe to Calumetville is the busiest section traffic wise, but US 151 has a wide shoulder for cyclists.  The steepest grades are very close to each other, first a short decline with a mininimum grade of @photo[10% on Mengel Hill Rd](17334147) followed by a climb with a maximum incline of @photo[8% on Johnsville Rd](17334148).

# Route

* Free Parking at the @poi[Winnebago Park & Ride](152344324)
* The Route begins climbing up the ledge (Niagra Escarpment) on @photo[Golf Course Rd](17339004). Heads north with views of @photo[Lake Winnebago](17334138) while riding through some of @photo[Wisconsin's dairy](17334151) and @photo[family farms](17334159).
* The @poi[LeClare Dairy](152345651) is worth the stop to pet some goats and take the short self guided tour of a working dairy and their cafe/gift shop has a lot of great food and goodies to take home
* There are few other small town Wisconsin bar & grills, supper clubs, if you're hungry or want to stop for a drink: Capone's in Pipe, @poi[enter label](152345650), @poi[Cedar Lodge Supper Club](152345653) , or @poi[Paula's Pub & Grill](152345652), in Calumetville, and @poi[Blanck's Supper Club](152345654) or @poi[Tommy J's Bar & Grill](152345655) in Johnsburg.
* The steepest climb begins at the @point[stop sign](d,14492.46) on the northern end of Mengel Hill Rd. After turning right onto Johnsburg Rd, climb up the ledge again to ride Schumacher Rd, probably the section with the @photo[best views](17334150) from the Ledge of Lake Winnebago.
* The section of the route with the most traffic is the 1.6 miles riding north on US 151 from Pipe to Calumetville, but there is a wide shoulder lane for cyclists, so expect traffic traveling at highway speeds.

# Notes

* An alternative to avoid riding US 151 is instead of turning @point[left onto County Rd. W from Schumacher Rd](d,19557.23) continue straight across Cty. Rd W onto Calmar Rd. turning left (north) onto St. Paul Rd.

* This ride is a pretty casual ride, but it is out in the open for most of the route, so make sure to bring along the appropriate gear for the weather conditions, sun screen, maybe a jacket there are a lot of wind turbines in this area for a reason, and the breeze can be a bit chilly at times.
* This route is probably appropriate for 95% of riders, regardless of their skill level when taking into consideration the two segments I've mentioned: riding on US 151 (high traffic) and the moderately steep decline and incline at the intersection of Mengel Hill Rd. and Johnsburg Rd.
