A hilly ride up and around a small portion of the Niagara Escarpment, locally known as 'The Ledge', along the southeast shore of Lake Winnebago near Fond Du Lac. A good hill training ride for any type of cyclist.

Routedetails

A short hilly ride for riders seeking to do some hill training or for the rider who just likes riding hills for fun.  This area of Wisconsin is not known for steep or long hills.  This is about the best I could come up with utilizing the "Ledge", which is the exposed western edge of the Niagra Escarpment, and a road that was named 7 Hills Road, so I figured with a name like that, I had to include it.

This route is full paved.  It begins and ends at the @poi[Winnebago Park & Ride](149067845) at the trail head of the Prairie and Peebles Trails on Winnebago Dr.  The route heads south on the Prairie trail to the @photo[Old Plank Rd. Trail](16070740) to make the @photo[intial climb up the "Ledge"](16070740).  The route then turns north to ride up and down the @photo[Ledge a few times](16070762) in the first 12 miles before turning east south east to ride the typical low rollers of Wisconsin's dairy land south on County Rd. W.  At the intersectin of County Roads W and WH is where Cty Rd W turns into@photo[ 7 Hills Rd](16070784)., which actually is only counting the seven hills between Cty Rd WH and State Highway 23 on 7 Hills Road; however 7 Hills Road continues southbound for a few more miles and adds more hills.  On this route, which does not ride the whole length of 7 Hills Rd. (which is an alternative routing), there are a total of ten hills on 7 Hills Rd. and then a few more on County Rd. T (aka 4th Street Rd) heading west back to the Parking Lot.

@poi[Crossing State Highway 23](149067849) will look goofy on the route map because the software must follow vehicular traffic rules. Hwy 23 is a limit access multi lane divided highway which utilizes traffic islands to direct exiting traffic onto intersecting roads.  Cyclists typically just cross at the intersection by @photo[using the drainage cut outs in the islands as "bike lanes"](16070787) usually stopping at the center island to double check that the opposite side traffic is clear before completely crossing the both sides of the highway.

The traffic for this ride will be fairly light. Once turning west on County Rd. T (aka 4th Street Rd), expect more vehicular traffic, but there is a fairly decent shoulder most of the way back into Fond Du Lac.

There are not a whole lot of services on this route other than a @poi[couple](149067846) of @poi[places](149067847) to eat in @photo[Johnsburg](16070776), and out in the country along Cty Rd. T there's the @poi[Red Cabin at Green Acres restuarant](149067848), other than that you'll have to wait to get back into Fond Du Lac so take some water and snack.

As you ride back into Fond Du Lac on Cty Rd T (aka 4th Street Rd) there is @poi[El Patron Mexican Bar & Grill](149067850).  After getting back to the Winnebago Park & Ride one of my favorite post ride stops is @poi[Schmitty's Oar House Bar and Grill](149067851) on Winnebago Dr.
